This is for Mrs. Gibson's class for the year of 2017-2018. Welcome to my class!

  • Library Day

Our Library Day this year is on Mondays.

Our newsletters for the first 2 weeks are incorrect for the Library Day. I recieved an updated schedule after making and copying them.  Students will have to bring their books back to get new books for the week. There will be limited time during the week for them to be able to go to the Library to get new books due to the Librarian's class schedule.

    Dear Parents/Guardians,

I am so pleased to have your students in my class this year. This is my eighth year teaching at Kirbyville Elementary, but my seventh year to teach Second grade in the Kirbyville district. Prior to moving down to Second grade, I was the Sixth grade Social Studies teacher.

This year the students will be expected to be respectful of everyone who steps foot into the classroom, including their fellow classmates. This includes listening quietly whenever someone is teaching or presenting, and raising their hand to ask questions and make comments in class discussions. They will also be expected to behave properly in class, and follow all directions and instructions.

We will be focusing on improving our Reading and Mathematics skills all through this year.  The majority of the homework students will have will be an extension of their Reading and Mathematics lesson for that day. They will also have weekly Spelling homework, and will be expected to study for tests. Both you and your student will be aware of their tests in ample time to prepare for them. Your students will benefit from anytime you could help them with their studies. Students whose parents are actively involved in their schooling tend to do better in the long run. At some points, if needed, students may bring home extra practice, with a note attached, to help them with understanding a difficult concept. If this happens, please help them with it so they can better understand the concept. If you feel your student needs extra practice on certain concepts, you may certainly request some extra practice work.

I feel you should be well aware of your student’s grades so you will know how they are progressing in class. Because of this, once I have graded and recorded assignments, I will send them home with your student. Please check their folders daily for their work. If at any time you have questions about your student’s grades or average, you can contact me via a note through your student, email, or you can schedule a conference.

I also feel it is important for you to be aware of your student’s behavior, so you will receive a daily update on their behavior. This will be done through a planner in their braded folder. Each day I will put a letter representing their behavior. The following chart explains the letters and their meanings:

    Very good or Excellent behavior

Had a few mishaps, but good behavior overall

Not a very good day; behavior needs to improve

    Behavior was unsatisfactory

If necessary, an explanation for their behavior will be supplied.

We do have a policy for our water bottles. Students will be allowed to fill it up in the morning and after lunch each day. I’m allowing them to keep them on their desks. This way they will be able to get a drink as needed without disrupting class. If your student cannot handle having a water bottle on their desk without it being a distraction, there will be repercussions.  First, they will be given the chance to store it elsewhere. This way they will have to have permission to get a drink, but it will prevent them from having to constantly be going back and forth from the water fountain. Then, after a period of time, they will be given another chance to keep it on their desk. Students will be given 3 chances before being banned from having a water bottle in class. There will be 1-2 weeks given for students to adjust to having the bottles on their desks before repercussions will apply. If they are banned from having a water bottle, I will send their water bottle home with a note explaining why they have been banned.

Keep this letter for your records.  If you have any questions or concerns throughout this year, please feel free to email me or schedule a conference with me at anytime. I will answer emails as soon as possible and schedule conferences at the earliest date possible. My email is chgibson@kirbyvillecisd.org.

                                                                                                    Thanks,                                                                                                            Ms. Gibson
