Hurricane and Flood

On average, there are six Atlantic hurricanes each year and over a three year period approximately five hurricanes strike the United States coastline from Texas to Maine.The Atlantic hurricane season begins June 1st and runs through November 30th. The Pacific hurricane season runs from May 15th through November 30th.

When hurricanes move onto land, the heavy rain, strong winds and storm surge can cause damage to buildings and property. In coastal areas, a large amount of damage can be caused by the storm surge driven inland by the approaching storm. Wind damage is also possible not just from the high winds of the hurricane, but also from tornadic activity that can be spawned by a hurricane.

If a hurricane is approaching you should be prepared with hurricane supplies and follow all evacuation advisories. In the Hurricane Preparedness link to the right you will find more information on how to be prepared to protect your family and property in the event of an approaching hurricane.

Online Safety

By educating yourself and your children, you can help make the Internet a safe and valuable tool for your family. The most important thing you can do is to pay close attention to your children and encourage them to confide in you. They should know that you will be calm and protective if they tell you about something that has frightened or disturbed them.
