On average, there are six Atlantic hurricanes each year and over a three year period approximately five hurricanes strike the United States coastline from Texas to Maine. The Atlantic hurricane season begins June 1 and runs through November 30. The Pacific hurricane season runs from May 15 through November 30.
When hurricanes move onto land, the heavy rain, strong winds and storm surge can cause damage to buildings and property. In coastal areas, a large amount of damage can be caused by the storm surge driven inland by the approaching storm. Wind damage is also possible not just from the high winds of the hurricane, but also from tornadic activity that can be spawned by a hurricane.
If a hurricane is approaching you should be prepared with hurricane supplies and follow all evacuation advisories. In the Hurricane Preparedness link to the right you will find more information on how to be prepared to protect your family and property in the event of an approaching hurricane. |
